7 Easy Crops  by Craig Idlebrook

Not everyone is blessed with a green thumb. Many gardeners are looking for low-maintenance crops after watching past efforts fizzle. And even the best gardeners suffer off years, scrambling for quick-growing crops to replant after poor weather or critter mishaps.

Don’t throw in the trowel! Here are 10 suggestions for crops that are easy to grow, including some quick-performers. While there’s no guarantee in the growing world, these crops are a good bet to succeed under your care, or in spite of it.

Garlic

While garlic’s an easy crop to grow, growing perfect garlic can become a lifetime obsession. Getting started is simple: In the fall, plant peeled cloves, pointing upward. Cover. Wait. Harvest heads in the spring or summer.

These hardy plants basically grow themselves. If you plant them in rich soil and regularly water them, the cloves will produce bigger bulbs. Erratic watering and poor soil leads to smaller cloves, but smaller cloves usually have a stronger taste. You can’t lose.

Green beans

There’s a lot to love about a plant that feeds itself.

Green beans are nitrogen fixers; they process nitrogen from the air rather than pulling it from the soil. In other words, growing green beans is a tasty way to fertilize your garden.

They’re also quick growers. You can wait until all danger of frost has passed to plant and still have plenty of the growing season left. Green beans are an excellent candidate for a replacement crop in late spring or midsummer.

Gently harvest the beans, and the plants will produce all summer. If you get tired of green, try purple or yellow varieties.

Peas

Another nitrogen-fixer, peas are great for gardeners who can’t wait until the frost is gone to start planting. As soon as the soil can be worked, you can pop peas into the ground.

Peas prefer some shade, but they’ll do fine with full sun, if planted early. Plant peas in loose soil about a knuckle-deep. Give them something for climbing to avoid fungus problems. Water regularly.

Peas are the perfect garden-grazing food. Children love being able to pick peas for munching while their parents are working in the garden. Also, pea shoots are a delicacy.

Cilantro

The biggest problem with cilantro is keeping up with it. Cilantro plants grow quick and bolt in the blink of an eye. If that happens, you’ll find cilantro volunteers in your garden for years, and wouldn’t that be a shame?

Stagger plantings of cilantro for a continual harvest. Plant in containers or in the ground an inch apart and a half-inch deep. Keep in full sun and water regularly.

Everyone has a strong opinion about the taste of cilantro.

It’s perfect for salsa and salads, but if you like the taste, you’ll find it fits well with almost any meal except pancakes.

Chives

Plant seeds in sun or partial shade after danger of frost has passed. Water regularly until established. Watch ’em grow. Wait until well-established to harvest, and then eat regularly. Cut stalks 2 inches from base for continuous growth, but don’t worry about measuring. Chives are hardy!

Use chives in any dish you would otherwise use onions. They are a beautiful addition to eggs, and their flowers are great for salads.

 Potatoes

Potatoes are the king crop in northern Maine, a growing area plagued with rocky, acidic soil and a terribly short growing season. That’s all you need to know about a potato’s hardiness.

Like garlic, you can tinker endlessly with growing the perfect potato, but you can grow good potatoes easily. They even grow well in plastic bags filled with dirt, according to one potato blogger. Potatoes can be planted as soon as the soil is worked, but you might want to cover them if it’s a soggy spring. Plant again in June for a second crop.

Tempting as it is to use a shriveled potato in the back of the fridge for seed, buy seed potatoes from the garden center. They’re cheap and, hopefully,
disease-free. Cut up bigger seeds so that each chunk has two or three eyes. Plant a foot apart in rows, closer in hills.

Dandelions

If you can’t beat them, eat them. Dandelions are nearly impossible to keep out of your garden, but they also are a great crop to eat. Every part of the plant is edible and extremely nutritious. And talk about a no-maintenance crop.

The leaves are tastiest young, but you can eat them anytime if you boil them long enough. Add young leaves to a salad or sauté to add to any dish. The yellow flowers are versatile and tasty. The roots can be brewed for tea, roasted or added to soups.

One word of caution: Dandelions are great at soaking up toxins. Don’t harvest them near roads or in public places where pesticides or herbicides are used.

Dandelion seeds sometimes are tricky to buy, but why bother? You don’t have to go looking for them; they’ll find you.

Genetically modified crops have been shown to have some very negative effects on the environment and on human health. But the USDA has approved 80 different genetically engineered crops and has never denied a single one. At this point, approximately 70 percent of all processed foods in the United States contain genes that have been genetically engineered.

Top 5 Biggest Concerns About CISPA

The House on Thursday opted for an earlier-than-expected vote on the controversial CISPA bill, which now moves to the Senate. But what’s the big deal with this bill? How might it affect the average Web user?

The Cyber Information Sharing & Protection Act (CISPA) is intended to allow for information-sharing between private companies and the government in the event of a cyber attack…as we all know, it’s a challenge to trust the government anymore.  Read more at:

The Parting Thought –
The average duration of unemployment in the United States today is about three times as long as it was back in the year 2000.

And according to a recent Wall Street Journal article, the number of announced job cuts is actually rising again….

Also, announced jobs cuts rose 7.1% in April, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, to 40,599 — and up 11.2% from last April — another bit of evidence that the jobs market isn’t doing well.

Economic conditions in the United States have been steadily getting worse for quite a while, but that is not the only reason for our employment problems.

There are two other trends that I want to briefly mention…

1) A lot of jobs that used to be very labor intensive are now being replaced by technology. Thanks to robotics, automation and computers, a lot of big companies simply do not need as many workers these days. Those are jobs that are never going to come back.

2) As labor has become a global commodity, millions upon millions of U.S. jobs have been sent overseas. Today, you are not just competing for a job with your neighbors. You are also competing with workers on the other side of the globe. Unfortunately, it is legal to pay slave labor wages in many of those countries. By sending our jobs out of the country, big corporations can also avoid a whole host of rules, regulations, taxes and benefit payments that they would be facing if they hired American workers

Workers are increasingly being viewed as “liabilities”, and there is a good chance that the moment you become “expendable” to your company you will be kicked out on the street.

That is one reason why I am encouraging people to consider starting their own businesses. If you work for someone else, your security can be taken away from you at any moment. But if you work for yourself, you aren’t going to get fired.

No Cost Shed Plans, Biggest Threat to Privacy-Business or Government?

When it comes to your privacy…

Who’s More Dangerous – The Government or Businesses?

The short answer is that there’s no real difference between the two. Here’s why:

The Government: When you sign up for a new web service, you might assume that your data goes only as far as the company you’ve signed an agreement with. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Rainey points out that filing a simple FOIA request revealed that government agencies like the DEA and even the IRS regularly collect, store, and request information from companies like Facebook and Twitter.

So the government uses the information they collect on social media to hunt and catch criminals—that’s not so bad, right? It’s not that simple. “Those organizations all map social graphs to see how people of interest relate to each other, and subsequently investigate their friends, followers, and others in their networks,” Rainey explained. To boot, the government often doesn’t bother to get a court order or justify the reason they want this information to the network in question—they make a few phone calls or send over a letter asking for someone’s information, and the service responds with the requested data.  Read the rest of the article at:

Future Money Trends is expecting the U.S. to face the perfect storm of events that, when combined, will send gas prices past the breaking point for the average American.

There are three major catalysts that will cause gas prices to reach this breaking point.

Number one, the dollar is in a state of collapse caused by a continuous increase of the money supply by America’s central bank.

Two, instability in the Middle east and a potential war with Iran would great[ly] disrupt the supply of oil.

Three, the supply of cheap, recoverable oil is dwindling along with a major increase in demand.

America is built for $50 oil and $2 a gallon gasoline. The seriousness of our situation should not be overlooked. We have multiple forces that will drive gas prices past America’s $5 per gallon breaking point… Rising gas prices caused by these three catalysts will break the backs of the American consumer, spiking prices to the point where present day normalcy is no longer the reality.

U.S. Government to Mandate Black Boxes in Cars
A bill currently in front of Congress will require all cars to have “black boxes” by 2015. Just like airplane black boxes, these devices will record a bunch of information about your car in the event of an accident, including how fast you were going, if your foot was on the brake, if windshield wipers were activated, and even if the radio was on. For some people, this is a scary invasion of privacy. It shouldn’t be. After all, 85 percent of new automobiles include a black box right now. Hey, watch the road.

Are you thinking that you might need a new shed? There’s an amazing assortment of good quality building plans available, for free, on the Internet. I’ve tried to collect them all and organize them so that you can find just what you want.

You’ll find basic storage sheds, gardener’s potting sheds, tool sheds, mini barns, woodsheds, backyard studios, lawn tractor shelters and more. I even threw in a few of my own shed designs. If you’re looking for something unusual, you’ll find a big eight-sided shed, a shed that looks like a pretty cottage, another that could pass for an old west saloon, an outdoor kitchen, a combination shed and playhouse, an outhouse design, a two-level Craftsman style shed and a pretty little shed that looks like an old one-room schoolhouse.

Most of the plans are from top home and garden magazines and building retailers. Many include complete material lists and illustrated, step-by-step building instructions.

The Nanny State Updates…

There are a few politicians that are willing to stand up and tell the truth about our national debt crisis. For example, in the video posted below Ron Paul scolds the rest of Congress for continuing to vote for debt limit increase after debt limit increase….

Difficult times have taken their toll on millions of Americans through job losses, home foreclosures, unserviceable debt, and ever dwindling retirement savings. By all accounts, Americans are worse off today than they were ten years ago, and the state of our nation, despite what Washington’s media masters report, is fiscally, economically, and socially dire.

Unfortunately, the American people seem to prefer politicians that endlessly lie to them about how bad things really are.

Grid Act Impact: Results of New Consensus Warning of a Year-Long Blackout

Last year, the Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Defense Act, or GRID Act, which would have required a modest investment to protect the grid from major threats, was passed unanimously in the House of Representatives. But the Senate refused to even consider it. Democratic Senators continue to stonewall to this day.

Perhaps they’re ignoring the warning signs because it’s the conservative Heritage Foundation that sounded the alarm. In a warning issued to President Obama, the Heritage Foundation reported, “Water, sewer, and electrical networks would fail… Food would rot, medical services collapse, and transportation would become almost non-existent.” Democratic Senators are even ignoring the findings of a special commission that Congress itself created to investigate this threat. The findings of the commission, by the way, are chilling: “Within 12 months [of this event], between two thirds to 90% of the U.S. population will be dead.”

Now, only a massive education campaign to make Americans aware of this threat can save us. The following has been excerpted from a paper entitled: Grid Act Impact:Results of New consensus Warning of a Year-Long Blackout. Download their PDF report at:

The Parting Thought – Still want the same pirates in office?
Why Politicians Don’t Work for America

Spectator Democracy and tribal politics are destroying America…

An overweight person knows that in order to lose weight, they must reduce their caloric intake and increase their physical activity.

So why do both parties continue the tax shell game?  For decades we’ve heard about various tax reform proposals but nothing meaningful ever results.  Instead, the system becomes more complicated, more obtuse and more unfair.

The tax system is rigged as a ‘reward-punish’ system.  Certain special interests get rewarded, usually by having some little beneficial perk tucked away into an obscure bill all nicely bought and paid for and often written by the lobbying group.

Politicians from either side of the fence cannot agree on how to stop their fiscal insanity and reduce our debt.  In fact, just the opposite happens and they bicker over which public program to reduce.  Social Security has been a frequent target with constant tinkering over raising the retirement age, raising the ceiling for earnings and so forth.

The only problem is that Congress looted this system long ago to fund their profligate habit of economic carnage and somehow feel that Americans should not get what is owed them after a lifetime of payments.

Taxpayers fund their own destruction of liberty.

Most of us are mad at the government but not doing anything about it.

Despite an ailing budget, Congress continues to fund programs which take away our liberty.  Instead, the majority of us are easily bamboozled and distracted by the sideshows (entertainment) offered us by mainstream media, who seldom focus on the important issues and are RARELY critical of government policies which are destructive to our freedom and economy.

The solution lies in cutting all fat out of government, downsize it, stop raiding the fridge, stop stupid spending and implement a simple, across the board plan so everyone pays into the system including foreign corporations operating here, our own Fortune 500 firms, non-profit groups and more.  It would help if the media focused on the important issues as well.

We need to create an environment where almost anyone that has a good idea and that is willing to work hard can succeed.

But instead of focusing on real solutions like shutting down the Federal Reserve, converting to debt-free currency, eliminating the income tax, shutting down the IRS, massively reducing the size of government and getting rid of thousands upon thousands of unneeded regulations, the mainstream media and our politicians are going to continue to try to get Americans to accept more government programs as the cure all.  That hasn’t worked for more than 35 years.

Can anyone argue that our government isn’t a  bloated porker which needs to have its stomach stapled shut?  We all know an ignorant populace is easier to control so the ‘lamestream’ media leaves the majority of us in a mass stupor.

Farmageddon-The family farm in peril

It is impossible to introduce into society
a greater change and a greater evil than this:
the conversion of the law into an instrument of plunder.”

– Frederic Bastiat
(1801-1850) French economist

FarmaGeddon…more anti-citizen behavior from government

In today’s issue I’d like you to pay a special note to the story in the Parting Thought section about the assault of small family-owned farms in this country. There seems to be nothing sacred anymore to our government…they just can’t keep from meddling and screwing the taxpayer. In too many instances, it seems the government creates an ‘Us against them’ situation and frankly, most of us are sick of it.

This very day, the news came across my screen. The Department of Labor had planned to destroy it all, and then barely pulled back when faced with massive protest. The bureaucracy was on the verge of passing new rules that would have banned many kids from working on farms. An exception in the law against “child labor” has always been made for agriculture. FDR would have been impeached if the 1938 law had not included that exception.

Due to government policies (and other factors) food prices are hammering the family budget…

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010 (the most recent year data was available) the average American household spent more than $6,000 on food. Since the average household spent just over $48,000 that year, that means more than 12 percent of the average family’s budget was eaten up by food.
So taking a bite out of your food budget is a worthy goal. And achievable – food offers tons of ways to save. Slice just 10 percent off that food bill, and you’ll free up $600 for things that are more appetizing – like slicing and dicing debt or beefing up savings.

Now let’s provide more detail to those tips, and add a bunch more…

1. Stop paying for names
Stacy tells the story of years ago standing in a Walgreens with a camera and microphone and asking people why they’re buying name-brand drugs like aspirin when inches away sits an identical generic version for half the price. Note that these aren’t similar items – a quick glance at the label will reveal they’re identical.

Answer? Either “This is what I’ve always bought,” or “If it costs more, it must be better.”
We all think advertising doesn’t affect us, but if your pantry and medicine cabinet are stuffed with name brands, advertising isn’t just affecting you – it’s costing you. Are there situations where name brands actually deliver quality or taste that makes them worth the extra money? Of course, and that’s when you should buy them. But if you’re paying 30 percent more for sugar, salt, flour, bleach, or other simple staples, wake up and smell the (generic) coffee.

2. Bulk up
If you know you’ll use all of it, buy it in bulk. For example, I can buy 1 pound of rice at my grocery store for $3.15. Instead, I buy 25 pounds at Sam’s Club for $9.99. By buying in bulk, I save $2.75 per pound. Can’t begin to use it all? That’s what friends and freezers are for.
Just because something’s available in bulk, however, doesn’t automatically make it a smart buy: Generics are often cheaper than bulk-packaged name brands. Don’t ever buy in bulk without comparing prices…Read all the tips here:

http://www.moneytalksnews.com/2012/04/30/30-tips-to-save-on-food/?utm_source=Money+Talks+News+Updates&utm_campaign=email-2012-04-30&utm_medium=email

The Nanny State Updates…

It’s almost tiring trying to keep up with the non-stop BS from government and its efforts at killing our country with stupid regulation and even dumber laws…

“This is Big Brother on steroids.”
That is how Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, described an amendment offered by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee to the “Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act” (CISPA).
The amendment would have authorized the Secretary of Homeland Security “to acquire, intercept, retain, use, and disclose communications and other system traffic that are transiting to or from or stored on Federal systems”.
Rogers said, as reported by CNET.com’s Declan McCullagh, “This would be the government tracking communications, your medical records from the Veterans Association, your IRS forms coming in and out of the federal government. This is exactly what scares people.”

Only in America…Herrin – An Illinois woman recently found herself under arrest and put in debtors’ prison over an unpaid $280 medical bill she didn’t even owe in the first place.
Breast cancer survivor and Herrin, IL resident Lisa Lindsay had received a $280 medical bill by mistake according to the Daily Mail. However after inquiring about the charges Lindsay was told she didn’t have to pay but somehow the bill still made its way to a collection agency.
Thinking the matter was put to rest, the southern Illinois teaching assistant surprisingly received a visited from Illinois state troopers one day and was promptly taken from her home in handcuffs and whisked away to jail.
After all was said and done the arrest ended up costing Lindsay more than $600 in total after legal fees were added to the original amount.
“I paid it in full so they couldn’t do it to me again,” said Lindsay.
Cases such as Lindsay’s are becoming increasingly more common across the country with one third of the fifty states currently allowing debtors to be imprisoned for the inability to pay their debts.

Barack Obama and his family continue to live the high life at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer.
Even many Democrats are starting to get very upset about this. The following is from a recent article by Paul Bedard….

Blue collar Democratic voters, stuck taking depressing “staycations” because they can’t afford gas and hotels, are resentful of the first family’s 17 lavish vacations around the world and don’t want their tax dollars paying for the Obamas’ holidays, according to a new analysis of swing voters.

The Parting Thought – Farmageddon in the USA

Just like the middle class, the family farm is heading for extinction.
Intrusive government agencies and regulation, fuel prices, Big Corporate crushing tactics are all killing small farmers in this country…

Between 1970 and today the United States has lost 88 percent of its dairy farms.
Less than 25 percent of all farms in America bring in gross revenues in excess of $50,000. The following comes from the EPA website….
It has been estimated that living expenses for the average farm family exceed $47,000 per year. Clearly, many farms that meet the U.S. Census’ definition would not produce sufficient income to meet farm family living expenses. In fact, fewer than 1 in 4 of the farms in this country produce gross revenues in excess of $50,000.

Today, there are 10 corporations that control most of the things that Americans eat and drink on a daily basis.

The Labor Department proposed bringing all manner of farm chores under the child-labor laws. After howls of protest prompted by a story at The Daily Caller, the plan has been dropped. “This regulation will not be pursued for the duration of the Obama administration,” says a press release from the department.

Thus, we have a rerun of last year’s incident, in which anyone who drives a farm vehicle would have had to get a commercial driver’s license. The Transportation Department had to back off that one too.

But every time public opposition makes the bureaucrats back off, you can count on them to come back with something different… or perhaps stealthier.

The Government Gestapo at Work…violating rights

Amazingly, in spite of all this there are still some small farmers that are able to overcome all of these obstacles and run successful businesses.
But that is where the federal government comes in.
In recent years, the federal government has become absolutely obsessed with going after small farmers.

For example, a recent Food Freedom News article detailed what the feds have been doing to Randy and Karen Sowers. They were keeping their cash deposits under $10,000 so that they would not have to fill out a bunch of paperwork, and the federal government came down on them like a hurricane….
“Structuring,” explains Overlawyered.com, “is the federal criminal offense of splitting up bank deposits so as to keep them under a threshold such as $10,000 above which banks have to report transactions to the government.”
While being questioned, the Sowers were finally presented with a seizure order and advised that the feds had already emptied their bank account of $70,000. The Dept. of Justice has since sued to keep $63,000 of the Sowers’ money, though they committed no crime other than maintaining their privacy.
Without funds, they will be unable to make purchases for the spring planting.
When a similar action was taken against Taylor’s Produce Stand last year, the feds seized $90,000, dropped the charges, and kept $45,000 of Taylor’s money.
Knowing that most farms operate on a very thin margin, such abuse of power wipes out a family’s income, and for a bonus, the feds enhance the monopoly power of Monsanto, Big Dairy and their supply chain.

At many other small farms across America, the feds have conducted military-style raids at the crack of dawn over the smallest infractions.
Some examples of this were detailed in a documentary entitled “Farmaggedon”.

We live in an age of paranoia where many of us believe that foods go bad long before their time is up. We confuse sell-by and best-by dates with expiration, and doing so involves tossing out an item when it’s still entirely edible. We often refrigerate foods that don’t require refrigeration.

When a food looks and smells fine, chances are it is but I found that many people don’t think that’s true. I left out cooked green beans overnight and asked people on Twitter and Facebook to take bets if I would get sick. While many people assumed I’d be fine, about as many figured I was headed for disaster. If you believe leaving a vegetable out on the counter for about a day is going to result in it going bad, you’re wrong. I was fine, even though it is recommended to refrigerate after just two hours.

Sites like Still Tasty seeks to provide recommendations for how long food can survive under various conditions, but in my tests I found these estimates to be overly cautious. It’s probably in Still Tasty’s best interest to err on the side of safety, but generally you’re a pretty good judge of what’s good and what isn’t. If it’s not growing mold, it smells fine, and a taste test reveals nothing out of the ordinary, chances are you’re good to go. In the end, safety is the most important thing but don’t go throwing out perfectly good food out of paranoia. Check if it’s still good first.

StillTasty.com has comprehensive information about how long you can keep thousands of foods and beverages.

The Best Way to Cook Corn on the Cob for a Crowd?
It’s Cooler Corn…
We like corn on the cob. And with eight adults at the table, that means a
couple of dozen ears. We would have used the lobster pot to cook them all,
but the lobster pot was busy steaming lobster…
Use a Coleman cooler and wipe it clean, then fill
with the shucked ears. Next, two kettles-full of boiling water are poured
over the corn and the top closed.
The corn will remain at the perfect level of doneness for a couple of hours

Hide In Plain Sight
A lot of people are trying to make themselves very visible on the internet so they learn how to use SEO to make sure they are found. You can use those same principles to blend in among the noise of the internet and make yourself very hard to find.
Some people want to be seen. Others want to fly under the radar. Most of us want a little bit of both. The real issue that most people have in the fight between public and private personal information is control over who has access to what information. We want the ability to reach out to the public at times, and at other times retreat into our sanctuary. Retreating is more and more difficult in a digital world. More at:

2 Liter Bottles of Light
The slums of the Philippines are getting an extreme home makeover in the form of two liter bottles in their ceilings. The bottles function as 60-watt lights powered by 100% solar energy. Refraction is an amazing thing. If you drilled a hole in your ceiling light would drop directly through the opening in a straight line casting a shadow on the ground in the shape of the hole. By placing a bottle filled with water into the hole, the light is refracted by the water and emitted at 360 degrees like a light bulb. Light bulbs are taken for granted in America, yet are luxury item for the Philippines slums. The two liter bottles filled with water and a small amount of bleach to keep algae from growing, act as a light in the often-unlit slums.

The initiative in the Philippines to provide these lights to those who need them is known as “A liter of light”. It is estimated that each bottle light will last for about five years, which is more than any store-bought light bulb will do you for.

Why is the DHS buying so much ammo for domestic use?
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), an agency that says its main purpose now is to thwart “homegrown terrorism,” has awarded a contract to ammunition manufacturer ATK for acquiring 450 million rounds of .40 caliber hollow point ammo. You can view the announcement of the ammunition purchase at this press release: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/atk-secures-40-caliber-ammunition-co…

“Hollow point” ammunition is never purchased for practice or training. This ammunition is purchased for the sole purpose of being used in active fighting. At the same time, it is a violation of the Geneva Convention to use hollow point ammunition on the battle field.

The Parting Thought

The Fall of the Soviet Union, If I wanted America to Fail & Cycles of Life

Does it seem there is more bad news today than ever before? It sure seems that way to me. Of course, our planet has a bigger population so the sheer numbers would indicate more bad things will happen and with the immediacy of news today, we hear about nearly every bad thing from car accidents in India to the sick things people do to their fellow citizen.

When the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet empire collapsed the world was supposed to collect a peace dividend from the end of the cold war – and we did for awhile.

It didn’t take long for a new bogey man to appear, terrorists. Our government now spends more on ‘security and preserving our freedom’ than we did for all of WWII and WWI combined…but somehow, I don’t feel any safer and as most would agree, we’ve sacrificed our freedoms and privacy in the name of security.

For decades, it has seemed as though history has been slowly building toward some sort of crescendo. The pace of change just keeps getting faster and faster and faster, and our world is becoming unstable…and it’s not just the Mayan 20212 prediction that seems to be wreaking havoc with our climate and weather.

The economy is falling apart, the fabric of society is starting to come apart at the seams, war in the Middle East could erupt at any moment and the planet itself is shaking in unprecedented ways.

Everything is cyclical. Empires rise and fall. The American way of life, thanks in large part to political greed and stupidity, is slipping away. There is no doubt in my mind our climate is changing. People throughout the world seem to be increasingly unhappy.

Over the years I have noted the cycles in my life. They always seem to come in three’s…three good things, three negative cycles. Is this just the natural rhythm of the cosmos or is it perhaps, the Mayan predictions coming true? If the Mayans are indeed correct, how did they acquire this knowledge?

We certainly live in interesting times. If you’re inclined to believe in such cycles both for the planet and for your own life, you may be interested in learning more about the seven cycles of life at: http://www.life-cycles-destiny.com/for/yearly-life-cycles.htm

What our country needs more of…Pro Bono startup services helping them to navigate the pitfalls of regulatory and judicial obstacles.

From zoning laws to quirky local statutes, all can slow down the launch of boot strap businesses. Red tape routinely strangles American small business which curtails job growth, and in my opinion, is one of the real threats to job growth and national security…but you won’t see many politicians spending time addressing the need in America.

Too often local government leaders work overtime to enforce outdated regulations rather than foster business growth. They operate on outdated civic and business models. According to complaints the Poor Man hears, many municipalities don’t allow home based businesses, another obstacle to job growth.

Ripples from the Zambezi, a book by Ernesto Sirolli, is something I’ve recommended to many in government who supposedly foster entrepreneurship but in reality, only promote tax payment and compliance standards. If they truly wish to help their local economies, they should be promoting viable rebirth strategies.

BLIP is one of the few groups helping entrepreneurs to overcome outdated regulations and you can learn more about them here…

Have a Bug-Out Location
The idea of a BOL (bug-out location) is to have a place you can escape to and live at in the event of an emergency. Again, we don’t know ahead of time what that emergency might be, so a good bug-out location should meet a variety of criteria. They include:

- A place you own or will definitely have access to.
- Has a shelter available.
- Is stocked with essential supplies.
- Is inconspicuous.
- Is far enough away from population centers.
- Is accessible year-round.

There are various ideas about what kind of BOLs are best. Some think of them only in terms of foreign homes, in case they need to escape the United States. Others may consider a second home in a small town a good BOL, anticipating chaos in the larger cities in some future political or economic unrest.
Of course, having several different ones might be ideal, so you are prepared for any circumstances. Even if escaping the country seems like a possible necessity at some point, you may need a bug-out location that is close by to use while you make further preparations. VIRTUAL, PART-TIME, INDEPENDENT” — MAJOR WORKFORCE TRENDS KICKING IN
Even without the news of CloudFactory, more experts are noting the disruptive workforce changes that we’ve been talking about here for some time….
Basically, middle-class jobs aren’t just disappearing — the very concept of “job” is being redefined. The things that once defined a “job” — reliability, benefits, a steady range of well-defined responsibilities at a given location — are either gone or going.
Excerpted from a new Forbes piece on virtual workers:
“Among large employers upwards of 32% of all positions are now ‘part-time’ or contract-based.”
“The new global workforce is virtual.”
“By the year 2014, 47% of US workers will be under the age of 35.”
The last point is significant because millions of boomers intend to keep working.

CLOUDFACTORY AIMS TO PUT ONE MILLION PEOPLE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES TO WORK ONLINE
The Internet, as we’ve long said, is ultimately going to globalize the workforce. Among other effects will be increased competition for work coming out of mature economies like the US, Canada, Europe, etc.
CloudFactory, founded by a Canadian living in Nepal, offers a look at this trend. For more, see this new article in

Life is hard enough on its own. Government makes it harder

In his latest interview with the SGT Report, forecaster Gerald Celente of the Trends Research Institute warns of the multi-pronged attack on our liberty and suggests we are well on our way to living in a country not dissimilar to that of Hitler’s Third Reich.

“First it was the Patriot Act. Now it’s the National Defense Authorization Act. And then it was Obama’s Executive Order giving El Presidente Los Estados Unidos the supreme right to call Martial Law at any potential threat – a potential threat.

According to Celente, nothing will change until the individual changes:
“The people aren’t ready yet. They’re not ready physically, emotionally, spiritually, philosophically – and that’s all it really comes down to. Because when you are at those levels you don’t take other people’s crap, and you don’t give it.”

They’re not willing to accept that they are no longer individuals, but rather, property of their government and those special interests who control it, and that their land, resources and very lives can be seized by Presidential decree.

New York became the first state to require license plates for autos in 1901. Owners had to pay $1 and make their own plates!

The Parting Thought – Hitler’s Enabling Act in America

We’re All Criminals in the Eyes of our Controlling Government

Are you just a tiny bit sick of the feds constantly diminishing the quality of your life?
Are you ready to start fighting back?

Get big government off your back…almost daily, our so-called government passes laws restricting our freedom and privacy. It is reminiscent of Hitler’s “Enabling Laws” which he passed one at a time to bolster his absolute control over the German people.

Those laws, like our unPatriot Act, allowed Hitler to sidestep the Constitution.

The following description of CISPA comes from the Electronic Frontier Foundation website….
CISPA creates an exception to all privacy laws to permit companies to share our information with each other and with the government in the name of cybersecurity…. CISPA’s ‘information sharing’ regime allows the transfer of vast amounts of data, including sensitive information like internet use history or the content of emails, to any agency in the government including military and intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency or the Department of Defense Cyber Command. Once in government hands, this information can be used for any non-regulatory purpose so long as one significant purpose is for cybersecurity or to protect national security.

Panic now… avoid the rush

The U.S. Constitution mentions only three federal crimes by citizens; treason, piracy and counterfeiting.
It’s almost impossible to go about your daily life and NOT commit a crime these days.

Harvey Silverglate, author of “Three Felonies a Day” writes, every American commits three crimes each day without even knowing it. (Profiled in our bulletin in 2010).

Today, we have so many criminal statutes today that attempts by lawyers, academics and government officials to count them…have failed.
In a study conducted in 2008 by Louisiana State University Law Professor John Baker could only estimate the number of criminal statutes on the books… an astonishing 4,500.

It’s no wonder. Modern laws have exploded in number and concurrently become impossibly broad and vague.

The more aggressive the government becomes in restricting our day-to-day activities the more important our Poor Man Survival resources becomes.
We give you an endless stream of cutting-edge economic and historical insight to help guide you to a better future…some reader comments:

Jim G. of NY says, “I am most concerned about an intrusive, unlimited and untrustworthy government…”

And Deborah P. of Florida wonders, “Will there be anything that the government won’t eventually oversee?”

Inflation is hitting pets, and their owners

A recent vet bill and hospital stay for one of our cats recently cost us over $700. That’s tough if you’re on a fixed budget. Statistics bear out how costly medical treatment for small pets have gotten (believe me, it’s even higher for horses).

“Prices have gone up much quicker in the last 10 years than in the past 30 years, and it’s hitting consumers in the face,” says René Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association

Routine doctor and surgical visits for dogs jumped 47%, cats 74% from a decade ago, according to the American Pet Products Association

Shop around and find a good vet at a reasonable cost. Comparison shop among reliable pet pharmacies on the Internet. Be certain to look through any company’s website carefully before you order. Your neighborhood pharmacy may have what you’re looking for, but make sure to double check with your vet first. Also, check retailers such as Tractor Supply, which often carry medications. Another good source for animal supplies is the Jeffers Vet Supply catalog at JeffersPet.com

For very expensive procedures such as surgeries, get a second opinion. The second visit will cost extra, but it may be worth the investment.

Consumer Reports suggests checking prices for shots and spay/neuter services at a humane society or SPCA. Sometimes they even offer free or low-cost services to low-income and senior-citizen pet owners. For minor problems, or when problems first appear, searching for answers on pet websites like AskMyVet.net or TerrificPets.com could prove useful. You could also try calling your vet and speak to a vet technician to get a clearer indication if an emergency trip is necessary or not.

Is Pet Insurance Worth Getting?
A recent Consumer Reports compared nine different pet insurance policies on the lifetime vet bills for a 10-year-old beagle. It found that insurance coverage would not work out financially for routine visits over the time frame used.
However, if you factored in severe or costly services such as chronic arthritis or the removal of a benign tumor, a few of the policies had a positive payout.

For basic pet supplies, food, and even grooming, you can look for pet-related coupons online.
Start by searching “pet coupons.” To get more specific add the name brand (i.e. Purina) or the name of the store (i.e. Petco) to your search and the latest deals should pop up.

Grow your own celery from your celery remains. Just chop off the base and plant.

Some basic cooking information regarding baking soda
1/4 tsp soda = 238 mg sodium
1/4 tsp soda + 1/2 c soured milk/buttermilk = 1 tsp baking powder + 1/2 c sweet milk
1/4 tsp soda + 1/8 tsp cream of tartar = 1 tsp baking powder
A pinch of baking soda will: fluff up mashed potatoes, prevent boiled syrup from crystallizing, keep boiled milk from curdling, emulsify gravy, de-gas and speed cooking time of boiled beans, tenderize boiled cabbage, reduce acidity in tomatoes or coffee, and remove cloudiness from iced tea. 1/2 tsp added to a fruit dessert (pie filling for example) will cut acidity so you can reduce the sugar needed (an old wartime trick).

>> A 13-year-old boy at a public school in Albuquerque, New Mexico was recently arrested by police for burping in class. The police marched him out of school and hauled him over to a juvenile detention center.

Why do you think our country dying?
The truth is that we killed them with our idiotic policies.
The “free trade” agenda is great for the largest corporations, but it is horrible for the average American worker.
According to the Economic Policy Institute, the U.S. economy loses approximately 9,000 jobs for every $1 billion of goods that are imported from overseas.

The Parting Thought –

The middle class in America is being systematically wiped out, and most people don’t even realize what is happening. Every single year, millions more Americans fall out of the middle class and become dependent on the government. The United States once had the largest and most vibrant middle class in the history of the world, but now the middle class is rapidly shrinking and government dependence is at an all-time high. So why is this happening?

There are three key factors that are constantly chipping away at the middle class….
-Globalization
-Inflation
-Taxes

As paychecks have stagnated, the cost of living has continued to escalate. Middle class families are finding that their paychecks simply do not go nearly as far as they did before.
Our politicians are stealing 150 million dollars an hour from future generations so that we can live more comfortably right now. The American people participate in this theft by voting these politicians back into office over and over again.

The “working poor” is a group that is rapidly growing in this country. If you can believe it, the United States actually has a higher percentage of workers doing low wage work than any other major industrialized nation does.

For those waiting for our economic problems to be solved, you can quit holding your breath. There is simply not going to be a solution to our economic problems on the national level. So why is that the case? Well, it is because the economic policies of both major political parties are very, very similar when you take a close look at them. Yes, that statement may sound downright bizarre to many Americans, but it is true.

Both major political parties supported the Wall Street bailouts, both of them fully support the job-killing “free trade” globalization agenda, both of them have dramatically increased the national debt when in power, both of them fully support the currency-killing policies of the Federal Reserve, and neither major political party would get rid of the income tax and the IRS. And that is just for starters.

Unless major changes are made on a national level, the middle class is going to continue to disappear. The ‘Average Joe’ can learn to save money, make money and become more self reliant using the free resources at:

Getting Paid to Try New Products

Those who read our bulletin regularly know I enjoy cooking and have recently been practicing my baking skills (I’m not the normal guy as I disdain televised sports and would rather be fussing in the kitchen). Fussing in the kitchen helps me to relieve stress.

I enjoy testing new recipes and as most cooks know, recipes are primarily a guide allowing you to experiment and to mix or match ingredients. What if you could earn rewards for your kitchen escapades? Here are a couple of resources I recently signed up for that may interest you.

For food products, sign up for Mills Advisory Panel (Bisquik, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, etc.). Compensation varies from free products, coupons and redeemable points.
MillsAdvisoryPanel.com

For Household Products, volunteer to be a tester at Smiley360.com and GlobalOpinionPanel.com and get invited to try a variety products ranging from laundry detergent, baking ingredients and more. Earn points which can be used toward gift cards from popular stores.

Find more test panel opportunities by visiting the websites for products you love, then do a search for ‘test panel,’ or try a Google search.

The Nanny State Updates…

For the last 10 to 20 years, I’ve been sickened by the way the government has wastefully spent money it does not have. And I’m disgusted by the ever-increasing powers of government that have continually taken away our (my) individual freedoms, not to mention the massive burdens it has placed on the private sector. -Nick, Teacher from PA

The Parting Thought – US OKs prison strip searches, even for trivial offenses

Government & Corporate Databases – Spying on US Citizens

You have no privacy in 1984 America. The Supreme Court just OK’d policies allowing prison officials to strip search anyone, even for trivial offenses (like the guy who spent the weekend in jail because local officials didn’t like the $15K siding job he did on his house)…Warning: Prisoners are just a guinea pig for the rest of us!

The Poor Man routinely writes about government efforts to monitor and control its citizens. Recent announcements about the TSA’s expanded citizen shakedowns at rest stops, bus and train terminals, the FBI’s expanded search efforts, SOPA, the Patriot Act and the elimination of bank privacy, the use of drones on Americans, all point to an expansion of Big Brother powers.

It’s been reported our government maintains an average of 40 different files on US adults scattered throughout several agencies. The Census Bureau and its new GPS system of pinpointing where you live provides them with capabilities even George Orwell wouldn’t have thought of.

Government databases are a subset of public records. Because they store large quantities of information and make it relatively accessible, government databases are particularly susceptible to threatening privacy. Databases are created by governments to serve many entirely laudable goals. This does not diminish their privacy-invading potential, however, and the growth in government databases has created some disturbing trends.

One such trend is the proclivity of governments to enlist private business as a functionary in crime fighting and social control. Businesses have a great deal of personal information about citizens. They will divulge it to governments without objecting the way citizens would if they were asked to divulge information about themselves directly.

General Accounting Office has found many U.S. government databases to be substantially insecure. Especially given how comprehensive they tend to be, these databases are ripe targets for people who may collect information from them and use it to harm citizens.

Learn more about protecting your online privacy and the laws which threaten it. Always remember, just because something is law doesn’t always mean it is fair or ethical.
